This is the density guideline only. It applies where class is assigned on density and where there is nothing unusual about handling, stowability or liability. Plenty of commodities carry their own NMFC item that fixes the class whatever the pallet weighs. Confirm the item with your carrier before it goes on the bill of lading.

What this freight class calculator does, and what most do not

Every online freight class calculator does the same arithmetic, because there is only one arithmetic. What separates them is what they tell you afterwards. Most return a class and stop, which is fine until the number is wrong for your commodity or until a reweigh moves you a band and nobody warned you it was close.

This one does three things the others generally leave out. It shows the working, so you can check the volume rather than trust it. It flags when your density sits near the edge of its band, because that is precisely the shipment a dock reweigh reclassifies. And it tells you where the density guidelines stop applying, which is the part that decides whether the class it just gave you is the class you will be billed at.

It works the same for a single pallet or a mixed load, in inches or centimeters, and it is free with nothing to sign up for. If you came looking for an NMFC calculator, an LTL class calculator, a shipping class calculator or simply a freight calculator, this is the same tool under different names: density is what the density guidelines are keyed to, and the class above is what they assign.

One question deserves answering directly, because it is asked constantly and has no single answer. What freight class is a pallet? There is no pallet class, because class follows what is on the pallet rather than the pallet itself. A standard 48 by 40 stacked to 48 inches and weighing 500 pounds comes out near 9.4 pounds per cubic foot, which the guidelines place in class 100. The same footprint at 1,200 pounds is denser and lands several classes lower, at a materially different rate. That is the whole reason this calculator exists rather than a chart.

How the calculation works

Length times width times height gives cubic inches. Divide by 1,728, the number of cubic inches in a cubic foot, and you have the volume. Divide the total weight in pounds by that volume and you have the density, in pounds per cubic foot.

The arithmetic is trivial. What is not trivial is measuring the right thing, and it is where almost every dispute starts. Measure the shipment as it will actually travel: including the pallet, including any overhang past its edges, including the shrink wrap, and at the tallest point rather than the average. Carriers dimension freight routinely now, with automated equipment, and their measurement is the one that ends up on the invoice.

What the class above is worth, and where it stops

The class shown by the calculator comes from the density guidelines published by the Freight Classification Development Council at the NMFTA, which is the same scale every carrier’s own calculator uses. It is reliable for what it covers, and what it covers has a boundary worth understanding.

The guidelines themselves say where: they apply where class is assigned on average density, and they presume there is nothing unusual or significant about the freight’s handling, stowability or liability. That is not a disclaimer somebody bolted on. It is the whole reason classification has four characteristics rather than one.

Density
Weight per cubic foot. The only one of the four this calculator can measure, and the one the guidelines above are built on.
Handling
Whether the freight needs special care to load or move: fragility, shape, hazardous properties, anything that cannot go on a forklift like everything else.
Stowability
How well it travels alongside other freight. Over-length pieces, hazardous materials that cannot be stowed with certain commodities, awkward shapes that waste the trailer around them.
Liability
Value per pound, and the likelihood of damage or theft. High-value freight carries a class that reflects what the carrier is exposed to, whatever the pallet weighs.

So the practical rule is short. If your commodity is classified on density and it is ordinary to handle, stow and insure, the number above is your class. If it has its own NMFC item, that item governs whatever the pallet weighs, and a density-derived class will be reclassified on the dock with a rebill attached.

What this page will not do is print the NMFC directory. The mapping from a commodity to its item number is published and sold by the NMFTA, it changes, and a stale copy on a website is worse than no copy. Take the density above and a plain description of what you ship to your carrier, and ask which item applies. The three questions this number answers

Is my pallet light for its size? Low density costs more per pound in LTL, because the carrier sells space as much as weight. If your density is low, the conversation worth having is about packaging rather than about rates.

Will stacking change anything? Stackable freight uses the cube better, and the density figure is how you see whether restacking or double-stacking is worth the handling.

Am I near a threshold? If the density sits close to a boundary, small measurement differences move the class, which means a reweigh is likely to change the bill. That is worth knowing before you ship, not after.
